Sergeant Foord (P. S. 47) present.

Victoria Gaol.

6th September, 1897.

Sam Yin states:- I am a prisoner in Victoria Gaol undergoing 9 months imprisonment with Hard Labour for keeping a common gaming house at No. 2 Wa Lane.

I recognise the paper produced. It is a list of the persons to whom bribes were given in respect of the gambling house at No. 2 Wa Lane.

I do not know the Sergeant present. I have never seen him to my knowledge.

There is an entry on this list referring to No. 47. It is the entry "47, $1.35, Kam". That means that $1.35 a day was paid to Chu Tsai Kam for No. 47. No. 47 was formerly in charge of the Canton Wharf. He was a Sergeant of Police.

The payment was begun about two years ago.

No. 47 had been to disturb Wa Lane. My friends told me so. I did not see him there myself. My friends told me that he had been there twice disturbing the place. When he came into the Lane the door of the gambling house had to be closed. This was inconvenient.

Two days after he had been to disturb the lane, A Pong came to me and said that No. 47 wanted money. A Pong
